CBD is short for cannabidiol, one of the active ingredients in cannabis touted for its anti-inflammatory and pain reducing benefits.
There is currently a global opioid crisis. In North America, people are addicted and overdosing on these potent medications at an alarming rate. Therefore, finding alternative therapies for chronic pain is a must and perhaps CBD is a natural medicine to consider.
When you take CBD oil, it interacts with the CB1 and CB2 receptors located in the spinal cord and brain. It also interacts with the opioid receptors in the brain stem to provide pain relieving effects and induce feelings of well being and calm, without making you feel high.
A 2016 study published in the European Journal of Pain showed that CBD oil applied to the skin over painful joints may help reduce the pain and swelling of arthritis.
Although stronger scientific evidence is needed to support the use of cannabis for health there are already approved medications derived from cannabis on the market. One medication for neuropathic pain has been helpful for people with multiple sclerosis and cancer.
And now with the legalization of recreational cannabis in effect, you may be more willing to try CBD oil to help with your pain when it becomes available in the future.
